GULF SHORES, Ala. — An Alabama girl decided to use her birthday as a chance to prove that it’s truly better to give than to receive.

Mia Lawley just turned 7. Instead of asking for birthday presents, she asked for donations to the Rivers of Love Animal Rescue, a nonprofit that fosters rescue dogs.

Mia’s mom, Nikki Lawley, said her daughter knew she wanted to hold a fundraiser. When mom suggested collecting donations, Mia was more than happy to make the sacrifice.

Mia’s aunt posted a picture of Mia with dozens of donations on Facebook, and said Mia has such a kind and loving heart for all animals and wanted to do something special this year.

Her parents said this has been a learning experience for their daughter. Mia hopes this can set off a domino effect and that others will show acts of kindness as well.

“It would be such a blessing for this to motivate others to donate as well, whether it be to Rivers of Love or any rescue effort,” said a spokesman with Rivers of Love.
