FORT WORTH, Texas — A Texas single mother didn’t want her son to be left out during his school’s Donuts with Dad event, so she took matters into her own hands, CNN reports.
Yevette Vasquez dressed liked a dad — with a baseball cap, plaid shirt, fake mustache and some cologne — so her son, Elijah, wouldn’t miss the event.
“Yeah, it’s the first time I’ve dressed as a man,” Vasquez told CNN. “We’re going to remember this forever.”
She posted the pictures of her getup on Facebook, and it has been a viral hit, shared thousands of times.
As Vasquez was nearing Sue Crouch Intermediate School, she wondered why there were so many vehicles in the parking lot. Elijah told her about the doughnuts event.
They quickly went back to their home a block away and Vasquez took seven minutes to put together a dad outfit.
“He was telling me what I should wear,” Vasquez said.
And when it wasn’t manly enough, he let her know.
“He kept saying, ‘No, you still look like a girl,'” she said.
When they got back to the school, most of the dads were in full support.
“Most of the dads thought it was really cool,” Vasquez said. “They thought it was really supportive and sweet. I did feel the energy of a few men who weren’t as comfortable with it though.”
Elijah was super cool about it.
“He was really excited,” Vasquez said. “He was shaking and said, ‘Thank you.’ I told him, ‘I did this for you so you can have fun.'”
Vasquez told CNN she has heard from single parents all over the world, sharing with her their own parenting triumphs and struggles.
“I may have to do it again,” she said.
