Denver police search for motive in home invasion murder

DENVER  -- The Denver County Office of the Medical Examiner has identified the man shot to death early Sunday morning in a home invasion. Frank Chavez, 53, died from a gunshot wound.

Police were called to a home on South Knox Court near Federal Boulevard and Alameda Avenue around midnight.

A woman hiding inside the home told dispatchers there was a robbery in progress and arriving officers found two shooting victims. Police said Chavez was found shot to death outside the home.

Family members said Chavez’s son, 24-year-old Francisco Rico, was found in critical condition but is recovering in a hospital.

Police said a group of men stormed their way into the home. Police are still trying to piece together a motive and are asking for the public’s help in identifying any suspects involved.

Three young children were home during the home invasion and shooting. The family said the children were not injured.

Police Cmdr. Barb Archer said  investigators do not believe gangs or drugs were involved, but the investigation is ongoing.
