DENVER -- A toddler died after falling from a sixth-floor apartment window on Thursday afternoon.

Denver Police Cmdr. Ronald Saunier said a passerby called 911 around 2:40 p.m. after finding a child on the ground, beneath an open window, outside the Mint Urban Apartments in the 1200 block of Bellaire Street.

Saunier said the child was around 2 years old and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“[We’re] not sure if we have an accidental death here, an accidental falling out of the window, or if there’s any type of neglect,” Saunier said.

The child’s mother, the mother’s roommate and other children were inside the apartment at the time, according to police.

“Anytime you have a child involved, it’s a very difficult situation,” Saunier said. “It’s difficult for the family, it’s difficult for officers, paramedics.”

Saunier said police were working with witnesses and everyone who was inside the apartment at the time to try to piece together what happened.

“[Our] condolences go out to the family and friends that are out there. This is a very tragic event," Saunier said.
