Powerful, damaging storms fire up across metro Denver

DENVER — Powerful thunderstorms fired up around metro Denver on Monday afternoon, bringing hail, strong winds, heavy rain and lightning.

There were reports of golf ball-size hail in Highlands Ranch that caused damage, including broken windows on homes and windshields on vehicles.

Heavy hail also hit other parts of Douglas County. The first place to report a big hailstorm Monday afternoon was Estes Park.

After the hailstorms in southern metro Denver, temperatures dropped into the 50s early Monday evening. At the same time, they were in the mid- to upper 70s in parts of north metro Denver.
