DENVER -- It's a day to indulge in a sweet pastry ring: Friday is National Doughnut Day. And you can score some free doughnuts around the metro area.

Started in 1938 by the Salvation Army, National Doughnut Day began as a fundraiser to help the needy and to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

Krispy Kreme is offering one free doughnut with no purchase necessary. It's also teaming with the Salvation Army to raise funds for the organization's mission.

Lamar's Donuts is also offering one free doughnut with no purchase necessary, but a copy of a golden ticket.

Glazed & Confuzed is offering 25 percent off all doughnuts as well as free coffee all day.

Dunkin' Donuts is giving away a free doughnut with the purchase of a beverage.

Tom + Chee in Fort Collins is offering $2 grilled cheese doughnuts made with cheddar cheese between two halves of a grilled glazed doughnut to celebrate the day.

Entenmann's Bakery is promoting a contest in which a customer can win free doughnuts for a year.

The Facebook sweepstakes will have 10 grand prize winners who will get free doughnuts for a year. Entries must be received by July 2. For each person who enters the contest, $1 will be donated to the Salvation Army up to $35,000.
