FORT LUPTON, Colo. -- A 59-year-old bicyclist was killed in an accident in Weld County on Friday morning, the Fort Lupton Police Department said.

The accident happened about 7:30 a.m. on Weld County Road 18 on a bridge over the South Platte River, just west of Highway 85.

Two semitrucks were stopped on the bridge near the scene of the accident, and one of the drivers appeared to be very distraught.

The person's body was in the middle of the road next to the mangled bicycle and fire crews had it covered with a white sheet.

Weld County Road 18 was closed in both directions as crews investigated. The road is expected to be closed for a few hours.

Police said the bicyclist was traveling westbound when he drifted into oncoming traffic and the path of the semitruck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the bicyclist will be released by the Weld County Coroner's Office pending notification of next of kin.
