GREELEY, Colo. -- A former Greeley teacher who admitted to having sex with a 12-year-old boy 40 to 50 times over the course of a year was sentenced to seven years in prison Tuesday.

Katerina Bardos, 25, pleaded guilty March 3 to felony child abuse and criminal attempt to commit sexual assault on a child, the Weld County District Attorney’s Office said.

Bardos was facing four to 20 years in prison. She was also sentenced to five years of mandatory parole.

The District Attorney’s Office said Bardos formed a relationship with the boy when she was a teacher at Brentwood Elementary School, then fostered a close relationship with the boy’s mother and sisters that was described at the sentencing hearing as “like family.”

In 2014, Bardos initiated an intimate relationship as a guise of being a mentor, the District Attorney’s Office said. She was arrested in May 2015.

“As prosecutors, we adhere to the law,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Thea Carrasco said. “A person’s background, race, gender, socioeconomic status, occupation or ties to this community do not make them immune to being held responsible for their actions.

“It is most unfortunate when someone we entrust with our or our children’s safety and well-being takes advantage of that inherent expectation.”
