LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Police shot and killed a man late Tuesday night after he allegedly opened fire on them at a motel, the Lakewood Police Department said.

Investigators said the shooting happened outside of the Motel 6 at 480 Wadsworth Blvd. about 9:20 p.m. during a check on a stolen vehicle.

Police said there was no one in the vehicle when they spotted it. They waited and a man approached the vehicle, then police moved in to question him.

The suspect took off on foot, setting off a short chase. Police said the suspect then turned and opened fire on the officers. Three officers returned fire, hitting him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured. An unidentified female who was a passenger in the vehicle was taken into custody for questioning.

The officers involved are on routine leave during the investigation, which is being led by the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team.

People who were staying at the motel were allowed to come and go, but there was a heavy police presence overnight Wednesday.  The shooting happened on the east side of the building.

The suspect has not been identified.
