9-year-old girl killed in parking lot accident in Estes Park

ESTES PARK, Colo. — A 9-year-old girl died Friday after she was struck by an SUV in the parking lot of an apartment building, the Estes Park Police Department said.

The 911 call was made at 4:23 p.m. and paramedics responded to the parking lot of the apartment building in the 1200 block of Graves Avenue. EMS attempted CPR, but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the victim as Ayana Fernandez Portillo. She was in the parking lot of the apartment building, where she lived, as the driver was exiting the complex.

The driver of the SUV was identified as 29-year-old Javier Ulises Hernandez-Solis. Hernandez-Solis was a friend of the passenger, 26-year-old Carla Fernandez Portillo, theĀ child’s sister. Police said both were fully cooperative as the incident was investigated.

“An investigation is underway, but initially this appears to be a tragic accident,” police Chief Wes Kufeld said.Ā “We are extremely saddened by this loss and our hearts are with Ayana’s family.”

A GoFundMe account is collecting donations to help pay for the child’s funeral.
