DENVER -- More than 43,000 fans filed into Coors Field for a flashback Friday matchup between Avalanche alumni and bitter rival Detroit Red Wings alumni.

“Back in the day, it was pretty intense,” Avalanche fan Carlo Rotola said. “That’s why this alumni game is so big.”

Hundreds of jerseys were spotted from Avalanche and Red Wings players of the late 1990s.

“The competition, the rivalry and the bad blood. I’m guessing it will be pretty laid back tonight, but you never know. They’re all pretty competitive. This might be one of the most competitive alumni games so it’s going to be fun to watch,” Rotola said.

The NHL’s Stadium Series visited Denver for its 16th outdoor hockey weekend. Fans of the Avalanche and Red Wings flooded the streets of lower downtown Denver for a party that started early in the afternoon.

“You’re outdoors, you’re in Colorado, you walk out to the stadium and the mountains are in the backdrop. It’s perfect,” Avalanche fan Alex Haag said.

The Avalanche alumni won the game, 5-2. The announced attendance was 43,316. The current Avalanche and Red Wings will face off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Coors Field.
