LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. – A northern Colorado father who was driving his pregnant wife to the hospital crashed the vehicle and died last week, according to the family’s GoFundMe page.
Tony Schmucker was driving a Nissan Pathfinder with his wife, Jill, and their two other children on the way to the hospital for Jill to give birth in the early-morning hours Wednesday.
The Colorado State Patrol said Tony Schmucker suffered a medical episode while driving eastbound on Lodgepole Drive near Larimer County Road 23 west of Fort Collins, the Coloradoan reported.
The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into an embankment. The SUV rolled, hitting a boulder and a tree before coming to rest.
The Coloradoan reported the Schmuckers’ son Ryder called 911 after his parents were left unconscious from the crash.
Tony Schmucker, 37, was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital but did not survive.
Jill Schmucker was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies where she underwent an emergency C-section to deliver the baby which survived. She suffered a broken back, the GoFundMe page said.
The two children suffered minor injuries. Jill Schmucker is expected to make a full recovery.
As of Monday morning, nearly $45,000 had been raised for the family.
