DENVER — In what was supposed to be a day of celebration for quarterback Peyton Manning turned out to be a disaster as he was benched in the Broncos’ 29-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday for their second consecutive loss.

Manning became the NFL’s all-time passing leader in the first quarter, but he threw four interceptions — three in the first half — and the Chiefs’ Cairo Santos made five field goals as Kansas City snapped a seven-game losing streak against Denver.

The Broncos avoided being shut out at home for the first time in franchise history when Ronnie Hillman scored from 1 yard out with 5:27 left in the game.

The Broncos have played 425 regular-season home games without getting shut out. They last were shutout on Sept. 20, 1992, in a 30-0 loss at Philadelphia. The Broncos have scored in 366 consecutive regular-season games.

Manning was a dreadful 5 of 20 for 35 yards and a 0.0 quarterback rating, the lowest of his career. He was pulled by coach Gary Kubiak with 6:34 to play in the third quarter and replaced by Brock Osweiler.

Osweiler was an upgrade for the Broncos offense, which didn’t take its first snap in Chiefs territory until there was less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

And on Osweiler’s second drive, he had already surpassed Manning’s passing yards in the game. Osweiler finished with 146 yards and a 7-yard touchdown pass to Andre Caldwell.

And while the defense kept the Broncos in the game by limiting the Chiefs to five field goals, Manning’s performance held back the team.

Manning surpassed Brett Favre for the most passing yards in NFL history with a 4-yard completion to Ronnie Hillman in the first quarter. Favre held the previous record of 71,838 yards.

The game was briefly stopped as the crowd rose to cheer Manning, and the ball was given to the executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Relive the game below as it unfolded. The Broncos (7-2) still lead the AFC West by three games and face former coach John Fox and the Bears in Chicago next week at 11 a.m.

The Broncos got the ball first and Manning was set to break the all-time passing record, but on the third play, his long pass was intercepted by Marcus Peters at the Kansas City 41. Peters returned the ball 28 yards to set up the Chiefs in great field position at the Broncos 31-yard line.

And Kansas City took advantage, with Charcandrick West running in from 4 yards to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead with 11:21 to play in the first quarter.

On the Broncos’ second possession, Manning set the passing record with a 4-yard pass to Ronnie Hillman. The game was briefly stopped as the crowd rose to cheer Manning, and the ball was given to the executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Broncos went three-and-out and had to punt, and the Chiefs took it to the Broncos defense, driving 43 yards in six plays and getting a 48-yard field goal from Cairo Santos to go up 10-0 with 6:19 left in the first quarter.

The Broncos’ first-quarter woes continued when they went three-and-out again and had to punt the ball back to the Chiefs. But after forcing the Chiefs to punt, the Broncos finally got their first first downs of the game.

As the offense seemed to picking up steam, Manning was intercepted for the second time, this time by Sean Smith near midfield near the end of the first quarter. In their past seven first-quarter possessions, the Broncos had five punts, five first downs and two interceptions.

The Chiefs cashed in the interception, driving 19 yards in eight plays to go up 13-0 with 11:35 to play in the first half.

After an exchange of punts, the Broncos had the ball but Manning was intercepted for the third time in the first half, this time by Josh Mauga at the Broncos 28. But the Broncos defense held and the Chiefs got a 34-yard field from Santos to go up 16-0 with 3:30 left in the half.

After another Broncos punt, the Chiefs drove 46 yards and went ahead 19-0 on the last play of the half as Santos made a 33-yard field goal.

Manning finished the first half 4 of 15 for 30 yards, three interceptions and a 0.0 quarterback rating. Overall, the Broncos only mustered 40 yards and had the ball for a paltry 8:50. It was the first time they had been shut out in the first half since trailing San Diego, 24-0, in 2012 only to come back to win.

The Chiefs took advantage of a kick-catching interference penalty after the Broncos went three-and-out by starting in Denver territory. The Broncos seemed to hold, but a defensive holding penalty by Kayvon Webster gave the Chiefs a first down.

Still, the defense rose up again and held the Chiefs to their fifth field goal by Santos, this time a 50-yarder with 10:45 to play in the third quarter as Kansas City expanded its lead to 22-0.

On the Broncos’ next possession, Manning was intercepted a fourth time, this time by Ron Parker in front of the Broncos bench. It initially was ruled incomplete, but Reid challenged and the play was overturned.

After the Chiefs were forced to punt, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak yanked Manning and inserted Brock Osweiler as quarterback. Manning was 5 of 20 for 35 yards and four interceptions and finished with a 0.0 quarterback rating.

Osweiler went three-and-out in his first drive, but in his second drive, he drove the Broncos into Chiefs territory for the first time all game. But the drive ended when he was intercepted in the end zone by Eric Berry with 12:03 left in the game.

Still, after two drives, Osweiler had 56 passing yards, 21 more than Manning had in two-plus quarters.

On the first play, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith hit West for an 80-yard touchdown to make it 29-0 with 11:10 left in the game. On the play, the Broncos’ T.J. Ward was ejected for delivering a blow to the head of a Chiefs player.

The Broncos avoided being shut out at home for the first time in franchise history when Hillman scored from 1 yard out with 5:27 to play in the game. The Broncos failed on the two-point conversion and trailed, 29-6.

The Broncos got one last score with 1:45 to play when Osweiler found Andre Caldwell on a 7-yard pass with 1:45 to play.
