NEW YORK — It has been 12 years since Bill Cosby sat in as a the guest host of “The Late Show with David Letterman” to interview Sofia Vergara in 2003, long before “Modern Family.” Looking back on the interview in the wake of the many sexual assault allegations against the comedian is a shocking experience, though.
The interview is actually Vergara’s first appearance on American TV and it doesn’t go well. The actress is promoting her film “Chasing Papi,” but Cosby is far more concerned with making questionable comments about her looks and clothes.
“Men look at you, and they think only of sin,” he tells Vergara. “You make me feel young again. You make me feel very … excited. Look at me.”
At a certain point Cosby starts speaking incoherently, even admitting, “I’m having trouble understanding myself.”
When the discussion finally turns to the movie, Cosby asks Vergara who Papi is. “Papi is the guy that every woman wants to have, because he’s gorgeous, because he’s successful, because he treats you right even when he’s doing wrong things,” she answers.
When asked to explain what the wrong things are, Vergara says, “What can he be doing right if he has three girls after him?”
“He could be doing a TV show,” Cosby jokes.
Comments like that take on a new meaning, considering Cosby is facing over 50 sexual assault allegations dating as far back as the 1960s.
