COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- There was a seemingly random assault in the Garden of the Gods when a woman riding on the back of a motorcycle got shot.
“We are trying to figure out how and why this woman was injured,” said Lt. Catherine Buckley, public information officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department.
It happened Sunday about 11 p.m. when police said the woman was on the back of her husband’s bike. At some point the couple passed a dark colored SUV.
“They felt that the vehicle was suspicious in the way it was following them but they really didn’t think anything of it,” Buckley said.
Arriving home a short time later, the woman felt pain in her lower back and realized she’d been shot. Police say the bullet grazed her.
“Its difficult to say what led to this incident,” Buckley said.
For visitors like the Beesley family, which was making a stop in the park during the cross county tour, news of the shooting is unsettling.
“Its random, bizarre, unnecessary. You want to kind of figure out why. I would want to know what kind of possessed somebody to do that, especially in this beautiful country,” said Lance Beesley, who has spent the summer traveling the country with his wife and kids.
For investigators, it’s a daunting case.
“There’s not a whole lot we can go on,” Buckley said.
The woman is unsure where in the two-square mile park she was hit by the bullet and neither she nor her husband can recall details about the SUV that followed.
“That’s not what our city’s known for so it does cause us pause, it does cause us concern and that’s why we are investigating it,” Buckley said.
Unlike Monday, those assembling in the garden after park hours on Sunday are few and far between.
“We do have park hours for a reason and usually when something occurs in the park after hours there are fewer witnesses that are available,” Buckley sauid.
The woman was treated and released from the hospital.
Police are asking anyone who might have seen something or who might have information to come forward.
