LOS ANGELES — Nuggets guard Ty Lawson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence for the second time in six months early Tuesday morning, TMZ reported.

The report said Lawson was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol for speeding on the 101 Freeway about 2:30 a.m. and that he showed signs of intoxication.

TMZ said it interviewed Lawson and his girlfriend, Ashley King, as they were leaving Le Jardin nightclub early Tuesday morning. Lawson is being held at the Los Angeles County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.

“We have been notified of an incident involving Ty Lawson this morning in Los Angeles,” Nuggets General Manager and Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly said in a statement. “We will not have further comment on the matter.”

In January, Lawson was arrested on suspicion of DUI in the 3400 block of Park Avenue West in Denver. Police then said Lawson was pulled over after being clocked going 61 mph in a 35 mph zone. He was also cited for speeding and careless driving.

TMZ reported Lawson was released on bail stemming from the January arrest and that he could not consume alcohol and had to submit to sobriety checks.

“In light of his new arrest, the Denver District Attorney will evaluate the new DUI allegation and determine if it is appropriate to file a motion for a change in Mr. Lawson’s bond and/or the terms and conditions of his bond,” the Denver District Attorney’s Office was quoted as telling TMZ.

Lawson has a court date in Denver on Friday.

In 2008, Lawson pleaded guilty to underage drinking and driving in North Carolina. He was attending the University of North Carolina at the time.

In that case, Lawson took a roadside breath test, which registered a 0.03 on a Breathalyzer, well under the state’s legal limit of 0.08. But there was no legal amount Lawson could have consumed before driving because he was then 20 years old.

In August 2013, Lawson was taken into custody along with his then-girlfriend Ashley Nicole Pettiford after a domestic dispute, though the charges in that incident were dropped two months later.

Lawson, 27, has been with the Nuggets since 2009. In June during the NBA draft, Lawson was seen in a live stream smoking from a hookah pipe with friends at a party and saying his days with the Nuggets are over after the team took 19-year-old Emmanuel Mudiay with the seventh pick.

When the pick was made, he said, “Told you. I’m going to Sacramento, bro.”

Lawson has two years remaining on his contract.
