DENVER — Police warn that criminals have been “spoofing” the Denver Police Department District 1 telephone number to make fraudulent calls asking for donations.

That means the District 1 phone number, 720-913-0400, shows up on your caller ID, so you believe it’s a legitimate phone call. If you get a call from this number claiming it’s Denver Police and the caller asks for a donation, it’s a scam.

Caller ID service is susceptible to fraud.  Using a practice known as “caller ID spoofing,” callers can deliberately falsify the telephone number and/or name relayed as the Caller ID information to disguise the identity of the calling party.
