DENVER -- Seat belts likely saved the life of three young children after their mother drove off of a bridge, police said.
The crash happened along the Cherry Creek bike trail near Iliff Avenue and Quebec Street in unincorporated Arapahoe County at about 10 a.m. Tuesday. Police are investigating whether drugs were involved.
Donna Pierre and her three children were traveling eastbound on Iliff Avenue when their SUV crashed through a fence and rolled down an embankment. It did a full rotation before landing on the bike path.
Police say Pierre was not wearing her seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. She was taken to Aurora South Hospital with serious injuries.
Two 7-year-old girls and a 2-year-old boy riding in the backseat were wearing child restraint systems. None of the kids was hurt.
Pierre has a long history of drug charges; she was charged with DUI at the end of March. If she is charged with DUI after Tuesday's crash, she could face child abuse charges.
