MADERA, Calif. — A suspected car thief allegedly spray painted his face black in an effort to hide from police officers who were chasing him, the Madera Police Department reported Sunday.

Jose Espinoza, 23, initially fled from police after being caught with a stolen vehicle on Saturday night, according to a post on the Police department’s Facebook page.

At some point, he managed to obtain spray paint and apply it to his face in an attempt to camouflage himself.

“The camouflage was ineffective,” police said in a statement.

Espinoza was arrested and faces charges of receiving stolen property, theft and other charges.

His bail had been set at $35,000.
