CHICAGO -- A grandmother in Chicago was arrested Monday after police say she sliced a baby's throat with a power saw.

The 9-month-old was found dead in the Little Village neighborhood around 9:40 a.m. Monday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Authorities told the newspaper a 52-year-old woman, who is reportedly the baby's grandmother, used a circular saw to cut the child's throat because the baby wouldn't stop crying. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the woman, who has not been identified, attempted suicide and was found by a relative. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with self-inflicted wounds. She is now in police custody.

 The investigation is ongoing.
