DENVER — The NHL is expected to announce the Avalanche will play host to the Detroit Red Wings in an outdoor game sometime in 2016, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported Wednesday night.

The announcement is expected in Columbus, Ohio, this weekend during the NHL’s All-Star Weekend and it will be one of three outdoor games in the 2015-16 season.

The Minnesota Wild are expected to play an outdoor game against the Chicago Blackhawks. It has been widely reported the Boston Bruins will play host to the Montreal Canadiens in the Winter Classic on New Year’s Day at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., the home of the New England Patriots.

McKenzie did not give a date or a location for the Avalanche’s outdoor game as part of the league’s Stadium Series, but Coors Field is the most likely location.

“We’re hopeful of getting the game, and it’s trending in that direction,” Avalanche executive Joe Sakic told The Denver Post. “Until it’s officially signed and announced by the league, I can’t really say much. It’s almost there, but it’s not there yet.”
