Laura St. John from Pearl Street Fitness explains how you can stay in shape during the holidays.

Most Americans gain 8+ pounds over the holidays and you don't want to be one of them! How do you survive corporate parties, holiday events, and this season of festivities?

  1. Don't hibernate! Do Active Metabolic Training - Only 3x per week!!

Now that it's getting colder outside, and it's harder to run and be outdoors for many of us, don't get stuck inside. Make the most of your gym time with Active Metabolic Training. Do a mix of cardio, strength, and conditioning in fast 30 second bursts. (we can demo 2-3 exercises that show all 3) You can spend less time training and have a more effective workout. It amps up your metabolism for 24 hours after whereas just a bike or run (indoors on treadmill or outdoors!) only amps up your metabolism for about 1 hour. Spending less time at the gym and seeing more results? Sign me up!!

  1. Fuel your body with more protein. 5x per day

We suggest eating 5 times a day. We help on the nutritional side and we keep your metabolism going all day by eating a healthy protein-rich breakfast, mid morning snack, sensible lunch, protein mid-afternoon, and sensible dinner. The protein rich breakfast stops your carb and sugar cravings in the early afternoon. The protein-rich snack mid-afternoon will keep you from being ravenous at dinnertime! We help maintain blood sugar levels so your brain tells your body the right signals that it's satisfied...This SAVES you from going bonkers at corporate parties, holiday events... Protein also helps burn fat and build lean muscle. Look and feel great this holiday season!

  1. Be involved in a community of like-minded people.

Your success this holiday season will have a lot to do with who you surround yourself with. Ditch the negative people that bring you down. Surround yourself with positive people who lift you up. We have found that a lot of the success is due to SUPPORT! This can be one friend who can be your accountability partner, or a new gym with a new routine where you're surround by other strong, confident people.

  1. It takes 30 days to turn your habits into lifestyle!

Set goals for Nov 15-Dec 15. We are doing a 30 day "Battle the Holiday bulge" challenge kickoff during these dates with Thanksgiving smack in between because we want to show people it's about 85% healthy choices, 15% fun. That's life. There will never be a PERFECT time. Holidays, events, parties, and fun will always be there. So if you work to be more mindful of what you're doing and eating for 30 days, you can turn a new habit into a lifestyle, without feeling GUILTY about having fun! You will be a step ahead everyone who feels guilty and "waits" to start until January!
