DENVER -- Expect a traffic mess in downtown Denver this holiday weekend.

The Taste of Colorado starts Friday and on top of that, the Rocky Mountain Showdown between the University of Colorado and Colorado State is Friday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Anywhere in and around Civic Center Park will be a mess. If you're headed to the Taste of Colorado, your best option is to hop on the light rail to downtown and walk a few blocks over. Road closures are in place and detours will navigate you through the city.

The top areas to avoid if you're driving around Friday are Broadway between 13th and 17th avenues; Colfax Avenue between Cherokee and Sherman streets; and Lincoln Street between 13th and 16th avenues.

Setup for the Taste of Colorado began a couple days ago. Some road closures near the park also started early. If you work near the City and County Building and you're headed into the office Friday, keep in mind detours will delay your commute.

Road closures will be in place until early Tuesday morning.
