Citing city politics, Colorado Springs Balloon Classic ending after 2014 event
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Colorado Springs Balloon Classic, a staple for nearly 40 years, will leave after this year’s event, organizers announced Friday.
Organizers in a news release cited politics within the city, including “increasingly rigid” special events procedures and an “onerous” city sponsorship application as reasons for ending the heavily attended event.
Parent company Colorado Springs Balloon Classic Inc. and local company Colorado Balloon Classic are debt-free and will organize events outside of Colorado Springs, though it did not add specifics, the release said.
This year’s event, the 38th, will be held Labor Day Weekend, Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
