NEW YORK — Chrissie Ortiz, the wife of the man who captured video of the fatal confrontation between New York police and suspect Eric Garner, was arrested on assault charges this week, an NYPD spokesman confirmed.

The arrest came less than a week after police arrested her husband, and less than a month after the controversial video hit the internet.

Ortiz, 30, was arrested at 5:30 p.m.  Tuesday after she allegedly became involved in a dispute with another woman, the spokesman told SILive.com.

Ortiz is the wife of Ramsey Orta. On July 17, Orta recorded a confrontation between police and his friend Eric Garner, who was accused of selling cigarettes illegally. Orta’s cell phone video showed Garner — an asthmatic — screaming and begging while police officers pinned him to the ground and choked him. He did not appear to be resisting arrest, but NYPD has stated that he was.

Garner subsequently died. The New York City medical examiner’s office later ruled the death a homicide, stating that the choke hold killed Garner.  The chokehold tactic is prohibited by the NYPD.

Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who is seen on the video choking Garner, was put on modified assignment and stripped of his badge and gun amid the investigation, the department said. A second police officer was placed on desk duty.

On Aug. 2, NYPD arrested Orta after they allegedly saw him passing an unloaded gun to another person in a public area. Orta is being charged with criminal possession of an unloaded weapon because he did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

NYPD said the incidents did not appear to be related.
