Brainard Recreation Area

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Rescuers were trying to figure out how one of their own died shortly after saving an injured hiker in Boulder County on Wednesday.

A group of several emergency crews were called and hiked up into the Brainard Lake Recreation Area around noon on Wednesday to reach Katherine Powell, a hiker who had broken her ankle.

Once they were able to get Powell, who was suffering from several other injuries in addition to the broken ankle, to a Flight for Life helicopter, the crews began their descent. That’s when a firefighter from Indian Peaks Fire Department collapsed.

Other rescuers performed CPR but could not revive him.

Officials said Thursday they would not be releasing the firefighter’s identity until the entire department was notified.
