NEW YORK — A New York state woman who wrote about her son’s persistent illness on a blog has been charged with killing him by poisoning him with sodium.

WCBS-TV reported Lacey Spears, 26, was indicted in a Westchester County court Tuesday. She faces charges of second-degree depraved murder and first-degree manslaughter in the January death of 5-year-old Garnett Spears.

Authorities believe Spears tortured her son for years and that she may have suffered from Munchausen by proxy. The psychiatric disorder leads patients to sicken a child to seek sympathy or attention.

Prosecutors said Spears did Internet research about the effects of salt on the body and then fed her son lethal amounts of sodium.

Spears plead not guilty Tuesday. She is being held without bail.

The Journal News published an in-depth report on Spears and her son. The newspaper found Spears had written about her son’s illness on social media and on a blog and had a sizeable following.
