Hickenlooper acknowledges speaking with Bloomberg after flap with sheriffs

DENVER — Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper acknowledged that he did indeed speak with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg during last year’s protracted political battle over gun control legislation, something he appeared to deny while addressing a group of Colorado sheriffs on Friday.

During a meeting Friday in Aspen with a number of sheriffs, a majority of which strongly oppose the new gun laws, Weld County Sheriff John Cooke asked Hickenlooper why he didn’t listen to the state’s top law enforcement officers as much as he did to Bloomberg.

“Well, lets, let’s stick to the facts,” Hickenlooper responded in a video clip of the exchange. “I never talked to Mayor Bloomberg. I…Again, that’s been out in the press and all this stuff.  Just for the record.  You know, I met Mayor Bloomberg when I was a Mayor, and I know him, uh, I think he’s a pretty good Mayor.”

Complete Colorado, which first reported the governor’s statement, had already obtained phone records from Hickenlooper’s cell phone showing that he did speak with Bloomberg last year.

Additionally, the conservative website Revealing Politics posted edited video of the exchange.

On Monday afternoon, Hickenlooper’s office acknowledged that the governor spoke carelessly.

“The governor often jokes about his ability to put his foot in his mouth, because he does,” said Eric Brown, the governor’s spokesman. “It is well established that Gov. Hickenlooper spoke with Mayor Bloomberg, as well as NRA President Keene and many other stakeholders in the gun safety debate. In fact, the governor released phone records on this matter.

“When the governor told an audience of sheriffs that he had not talked to Bloomberg, the governor was attempting to convey he never had a conversation with Bloomberg that influenced the decision he made. In no way did the governor intend to mislead the sheriffs or anyone else.”

Hickenlooper is currently on a three-day economic development trip to Mexico.

The four Republicans vying to challenge him this fall are in the final stretch of a primary election and Hickenlooper’s comments are offering them an opportunity to rally the conservative base.

Bob Beauprez, for one, also slammed Hickenlooper for reportedly telling the sheriffs that he regrets passing the gun bills because of the uproar they caused.

“It’s unbelievable that this governor would steal the Liberty of Coloradans and then apologize – not for the taking – but the outpouring of anger from both sheriffs and law-abiding Coloradans,” said Bob Beauprez. “This is a governor without leadership or principle. He decides to restrict the rights of Coloradans and months later apologizes for not doing his homework.”

Scott Gessler turned the flare-up into a fundraising pitch that begun thusly:

“John Hickenlooper has a complete lack of respect for the majority of Coloradans and our Colorado County Sheriffs.

“Hickenlooper met with our County Sheriffs and as our Sheriffs were asking him why he didn’t ask the opinions of any of them before forcing through his gun grabbing legislation, Hickenlooper responded to Larimer County Sheriff and Gessler supporter Justin Smith by saying, ‘How many apologies do you want? What the F@%#?’”

According to Brown, Gessler is quoting Hickenlooper correctly but without context; he’d been asked the same question by the sheriffs multiple times and the f-bomb reportedly drew laughter from the room, Brown said.

“It was a lighter moment, not the angry tirade it’s being portrayed as,” Brown said.

Liar, liar, pants on fire. Yes, he DID talk to Bloomberg about bans on 2nd Amendment rights and AFTER he got caught in a lie he fesses up. That’s bad enough, but for him to say the Big Gulp, salt, trans fats, and cigarette banning Nazi is a good mayor shows just how much he approves of Big Government intruding on individual liberties. Hick is a guy who thinks he knows best for all of us. I beg to differ.

So, sheriffs say Bloomberg stated for the record – he never talked to Bloomberg. Hick’s spokeman says he didn’t say that. Conservative website cites phone records showing he DID talk to Bloomberg. Video surfaces showing Hick DID say he never talked to Bloomberg. Hick Spokesman says he did talk to him, but it didn’t influence his decision. You following this? LIe, Lie, Lie, then spin…

Oh please. Talk to — didn’t talk to Bloomberg. Every politician eventually contradicts themselves. Don’t misunderstand! It would be interesting to understand why Hickenlooper felt a need to lie like that (again). But that’s not what interests me. In this case, what interests me is the INFLUENCE (translation: money) that people like Bloomberg or even Obama seem to have when it comes to public policy. So can he (Hickenlooper) just answer the question? Or did we somehow allow ourselves to be side tracked from the real issue?

Once again, WHY DID HICKENLOOPER IGNORE >>>EVERY SINGLE SHERIFF IN COLORADO <<< BEFORE SIGNING THE (unreasonable) GUN CONTROL BILL?!

Colorado doesn’t need this puppet whose master is in New York. He believes he can buy Coloradans but they’ve proven their mettle. I fully expect them to toss out a whole bunch of socialist-progressive-democrat puppets in November.

Now Mr. Glaze, 43 years old, has stepped away from the fight. Friday marked his last day working for Mr. Bloomberg’s organization, now called Everytown for Gun Safety, after three and a half years as executive director.

In an interview at his organization’s Washington office earlier this month, Mr. Glaze expounded on how President Barack Obama’s unrelated political problems – health care, Edward Snowden, congressional gridlock – damaged the gun-control cause.

And Mr. Glaze said the movement hasn’t solved one of its signature problems: Many mass shootings wouldn’t have been stopped by tighter regulations proposed by gun-control advocates, even if they might have prevented other gun crimes.

no gun free zones, everyone taught gun safety and required to carry a gun that is every one with clean record and no psychological problems. if they know they can be shot also they will stop doing these things. also cars kill more people than people with guns do lets ban cars.

Chickenpooper is just another far-left liberal who is in the back pocket of Bloomberg and Obama, and the socialist Democratic Party. It’s time for REAL “hope and change”…vote these liberal hacks out of office!

We need a Governor who is for Coloradans – one that does not speak “carelessly” and certainly one that reads/understands a bill and listens before signing it into law.

As the majority owner of our government here in Colorado, it sure would be nice if bloomberg would put some some of that money towards fixing our bridges or the many roads like Jamestown canyon that were destroyed by flooding. Or ANYTHING that is not designed to divide our state!

  • Are you Effin` kidding me?

Not only is he a liar..(Hey he`s a politician) he and the partners in Wynkoop holdings are accessories to murder for the killing of the Denver cop, no secret they hire illegals. Nobody can say that the Hick isn`t sympatico with illegals..He probably is pen pal’s with the guy that did it.

Both Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet are east coast liberals that have brought their form of elitism with them to Colorado. It’s no wonder Hickenlooper talked with nanny-stater Michael Bloomerg and lied about it. That’s just what liberals do.

“Appeared to deny?” He flatly denied it – “for the record”. Hick said he met him, but never talked to him. He lied to the Sheriffs – more than once. He said he never knew the laws he signed would be controversial, despite hundreds of cars honking and protesters at the capitol. He also said he never knew the sheriffs wanted to meet with him, despite a hand delivered letter to his office by Sheriff Smith of Larimer county and another letter from the Sheriff’s Association. He’s just a liar taking orders from back east.

Gee … what’s the big deal about simply ANOTHER Hickenlooper lie? If it weren’t for a few big wildfires and floods, Hickenlooper would have virtually zero positive press or photo-ops. Without those distractions, we would see only his constant lying, pandering, indecisive job record. Vote him out!
