SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Three men at an apartment, two women outside a sorority and one visitor to a deli were killed in a rampage Friday night in a college community near Santa Barbara, California, authorities said Saturday evening.

The two women were identified as Katie Cooper, 22, and Veronika Weiss, 19, both students at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Christopher Martinez, 20, was killed at the deli, officials said.

Elliot Rodger, 22, went on a rampage in Isla Vista, a community near the university and Santa Barbara City College, stabbing his roommates and shooting others during a violent spree Friday, Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters.

Martinez’s father gave a wrenching statement to the news media Saturday afternoon.

He was “a really great kid” whose “death has left our family lost and broken,” Richard Martinez said.

“Our family has a message for every parent out there: You don’t think it will happen to your child until it does,” the visibly emotional parent said, his voice rising to a shout in obvious agony.

“Why did Chris die? Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights, what about Chris’ right to live?” he continued.

“When will this insanity stop?” he said. “When will enough people say, stop this madness, we don’t have to live like this? Too many have died. We should say to ourselves — not one more.”

Police say the shooter also died.

“It would appear that he took his own life,” said Brown.

‘What a tragic loss’

Weiss’ Facebook page — with a banner promoting a sorority event — was filling with tributes Saturday evening.

“Rest in peace Veronika Weiss. Its not fair that life was taken from you in this manor. My thoughts are with your loved ones,” wrote one commenter.

“… You were ALWAYS smiling. And I thought you were beautiful. Where are you now?” wrote another.

“My condolences to the family… What a tragic loss… R.I.P.,” read a third.

Weiss was a graduate of Westlake High School in Thousand Oaks, California, according to her Facebook page.

Shooter’s YouTube video titled ‘Retribution’

In a YouTube video he posted titled “Retribution,” Rodger announced his intent to commit mass murder at a sorority house at UCSB.

“On the day of retribution I’m going to enter the hottest sorority house of UCSB,” he said. “I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you.”

Police said 13 people were injured in the melee — four by vehicle, eight by gunshot wound, and one of unknown origin. Authorities earlier said seven people were injured.

Some of the injured were being treated in a hospital for gunshot wounds or traumatic injuries, including at least one who was in surgery, said sheriff’s office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover.

Nick Pasichuke, who was hit by Rodger’s BMW, suffered two broken legs.

“There was a guy driving a BMW. I was on a longboard (elongated skateboard) and he aimed his car at our group of friends and ginned it into us,” he said. “I have two broken legs and need surgery. The police said I flew roughly 50 feet into a busy intersection.”

He added, “This is all so crazy.”

Witness: ‘She was hysterical’

Skylar Serge witnessed one of the shootings from her house.

“I could see a woman on a bike get thrown,” she said.

The woman was bleeding, she added.

“She was hysterical. She was not sure if it was blood running down her leg” or water from her water bottle.

The woman was cared for by an employee from a nearby convenience store who wrapped a belt around her thigh to stop the bleeding, said another witness, Farah Reiz.

The shootings occurred in a crowded area bustling with activity on Memorial Day weekend.

“These students are among the best in the country and the loss of life is palpable,” University of California system president Janet Napolitano told CNN.

NOT the guns fault…in EVERY mass shooting in this country, the shooter has been on psychotropic meds.

This happened in California… why didn’t all their advanced gun control laws work??? How could they not?
After all, they are better educated and more intelligent than the rest of us because they are enlightened liberals and we are just dumb sheep who need their divine intervention and guidance or we will utterly fail in our own aspirations.

Obviously, the only thing that could fix this is more laws and regulations on law abiding citizens, many of which have never been arrested or broken any laws….

I’d bet my left um coca ball that this happened in a “Gun Free” zone on this uber-liberal campus too…. those things are amazingly effective…..

@anonymous. Stop with the red herrings and let’s have a real conversion. People like you (or the two of you) just want to kill the conversation. Not one commenter has blamed the gun. The father is right. We don’t have to live like this. Why would you be so against trying to keep guns out of the hands of people like this?

    • colocaver

Weak individuals like yourself and Mr. Elliot are scared and intimidated by law-abiding citizens carrying guns. Personally I am afraid of people like you who are willing to give up liberty for security. Liberals like yourself created the opportunity for an weak individual to go on this rampage because he knew he would not be opposed in his onslaught. Some of you don’t get it, and the other half do it with purpose, because each day when you wake up, you go to work at destroying traditional American liberties and values. And we are calling you out now! Domestic Enemies of the Constitution and People are what Liberals are. And the ones that follow in good intent and ignorance, your ignorance is soon coming a cost our Liberty can bear no more.

And what I mean is people like Tom Mauser, Mr. Martinez, and others use the deaths of their own to politicize and try to take our God Given, inalienable rights with the assistance of politicians and special interests that want to take them more. There are hundreds more l;ike them, and they are Domestic Enemies of the Constitution and the People! You do not side with the rights we have sworn to uphold! Yes you are something else, not an American – Over 200 years of tradition says you do not belong!

Colocaver, I suggest you establish another country and create a constitution where everyone is required to carry guns. That will make everyone safe and form a better society in your eyes. Let’s see if it works. The argument of more guns making us safer is insane! If the need to carry guns creates a better, more advanced civilization, count me out! We are NOT safer with more guns. We should rise above the wild west, gun justice days. Your “anti-gun is anti-American” theory is what scares the Americans that want a better, safer country without guns. We DO have a right to be safe from gun violence! And, of course, violence is going to happen regardless of laws. But my bet is less guns make us safer, not more guns. I’ll take that bet now and forever! And your rant that the right to bear arms is what make this country great is wrong. The other freedoms that are still necessary today – the right of free speech (including your “it’s the gun way or the highway” rant), and the right of freedom of religion, are what makes this country great. It’s not the guns. People of other countries admire America for those freedoms, not the gun freedom.

D should go stroll around south side Chicago, Detroit, or south Atlanta and spread the word about gun violence. (While bot carrying of course.)

I don’t know why the U.S. hasn’t banned guns yet. The government was extremely effective with the war on drugs.

      • colocaver

D – We the People already started a country about those things 200 years ago – Stop trying to hi-jack ours like terrorists and go join Putin in resurrecting the Socialist States of the old iron curtain or live in Europe!

  • Lin Collingwood

The NRA had NOT one thing to do with this! He could have used a bomb and done the same thing. Lets ban gunpower, pipes, saws to cut the pipe, ball bearings, nails, B.B.’s,I can go on and on. You wish to kill you will find a way. Before gun’s people killed after guns people will still kill. All you gun haters out there get over it. Put the blame where it belong on the killer not the tool they use. Banning guns will not save one person just be kill another way.Your drinking the koolaid if you think otherwise.

  • Linda gill

The rest of the western world can’t understand how guns cannot be restricted/ outlawed in the US. This right to bear arms has no place in modern society. I lived through the gun amnesty in Australia and now live in Singapore. Innocent people don’t have to die lie this. So so sad!

    • colocaver

The rest of the “Western World” doesn’t have the rights we so adore! And over our dead bodies will they be changed! Move to another country if you do not support the Constitution – If you have citizenship – Renounce it – move away!

The whole world would be speaking either Nipponese or German if it was not for the Second Amendment and the right to Bear Arms, the western world has fallen twice since the Second Amendment and the bearers of it’s torch have rescued the western world from the gates of Hell!

    • thisismyboomstick

If you check into the numbers for assorted gun related violence in Australia they have actually gone up since firearms were confiscated. I’ll let you do the homework.

  • Louis Cannaliato

He started his rampage by stabbing his roommates; so first you need to ban knives. When are you idiots out there going to start working on the real problems; start making an example of the ones doing these crimes. Put them in the chair immediately and get rid of the ones sitting in prison for years before they are put to death. You political correct libtards made this problem, so fix it without blaming guns.

  • annpirie

All of the gun laws in the world would not have prevented this tragedy. If it were illegal for every single person in this country to have a gun, this travesty would still have taken place.

  • Truth Crusader

What is this going to do to the trade in value of my Beamer? I feel disgusted for buying a car from a company that murders people.

  • S2

Sorry for your loss,We’re an armed society, don’t like it leave. Ask the “civilized” nations like France in May 1940 how an unarmed populace fared.

  • Anonymous

I am very sorry for your loss, but this man also used knives and a car to kill or assault others. Banning guns will not solve your problem, can’t you people see this? They would have to ban everything that could be used to kill in order to stop these senseless crimes. This guy said what he was going to do in advance, why didn’t anyone report it?

It may be self evident that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are God given rights AS is the right to bear arms. Look to the Bible for that. The Israelites had that, God insisted. For a time. God’s Law, Judges chosen by prophets. They cried out for a King, God warned them. They insisted. Let’s remember they were won back from tyranny with guns. Tolerance of opinion vital to a still flawed system of governance. Some of you really don’t understand and/or care about that vital part of our representative republic.

  • Are you Effin` kidding me?

Another hanging curveball for anti gun Eli Stokols and Heidi Hemmet. Now we have to listen to anti gun rants for the next week.

  • Jason Byer

Richard Martinez: I did not hear you mention the knives used to kill three of the kids. I do not think you should be forgetting the knives that we should outlaw as well. While we are at it lets outlaw cars and baseball bats and hammers and ……. Seriously that is the route you decided to go? Three out of six were killed with an object you use almost every day. Are you going to mourn the loss of your sons life or get political? You make it very obvious that you are, and were before this happened, anti gun. I would be mourning in private, not using the opportunity to try to get other people to feel the same as me. I really feel bad for you, your family and all others involved but come on. That is just stupid to blame our founding fathers and freedom for this. The killer had well documented mental problems. Your message should be to get those psychos out of general population.
