JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A group of Jefferson County residents who didn’t want a halfway house moving into their area next to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds have gotten their wish.

After receiving feedback from the public, the Jefferson County Commissioners will not pursue moving its Community Corrections program along the West Sixth Avenue Frontage Road near the fairgrounds and the Foothills Animal Shelter, the county said on its website.

The halfway house currently is off Colfax Boulevard in Lakewood. On Saturday, a group of about 100 members of the Coalition for a Safe Fairgrounds protested the proposed move.

A planned meeting June 25 to discuss the move near the fairgrounds has been canceled.

The Jefferson County residents deserve something worse than a halfway house, as they are so selfish that they wish that the halfway house will be in someone else’s backyard. Isn’t selfishness a root cause of many crimes? These residents are no better than those they are trying to keep out. And I have never heard of an increase in crime in a neighborhood containing a halfway house, that was directly attributable to the halfway house. These people have a perceived fear of a threat that does not exist. And their fear is caused by ignorance; scary sounding rhetoric from news media, politicians, and law enforcement; and the bandwagon effect.

The halfway house is already located in Jefferson County – on Colfax in Lakewood. The were simply seeking a new location. Why don’t you get your facts straight before you bash an entire county of people.

Anonymous, your comment was virtually incredible. Notice I carefully couched it with “virtually.” Should I have detailed every name of those who opposed it? Anyone even vaguely familiar with the story will know to which group my post referred. I wrote it as such for the sake of brevity. I live in Jeffco. Do you think I was bashing myself?

The residents and businesspeople of this neighborhood aren’t selfish, ignorant or the root cause of crime. They simply don’t want this type of facility near them and mounted a sufficient argument against its presence, that my friend is what democracy and free choice is about. Not your choice, but ours!

They didn’t oppose it for no asserted reason. No, they are ignorant in thinking that anyone and everyone convicted of a crime (think Martha Stewart) is figuratively foaming at the mouth and is something akin to Ted Bundy. Democracy, hypocrisy. These people excercised free speech, but it didn’t prove that they are honest or knowledgeable about the issue. I will do a one-on-one debate with their most knowledgeable representative.

The issue is settled for the proposed site however I’m sure ICCS would consider your alternate suggestion. Thanks for your input Dale.
