NORTH REDINGTON BEACH, Fla. -- Beach-goers got a surprise in Florida over the weekend when they spotted a different kind of swimming trunk in the Gulf of Mexico.

An elephant.

Bay News 9 in Tampa, Fla., says the elephant that was taking a dip in the Gulf was part of a beach birthday party being held on North Redington Beach, in Pinellas County.

The station reported a woman asked the city commission if she could have a trained elephant at her 60th birthday party, and the commission approved the request.

Todd Unbehagen was walking on the beach with his family when he saw the elephant.

"We could not believe our eyes," Unbehagen said.
