ASPEN, Colo. -- New charges were filed against the three defendants accused of murdering socialite Nancy Pfister earlier this month.
Prosecutors filed new felony counts against 65-year-old William Styler, his wife, 62-year-old Nancy Styler, and Aspen resident Katherine Carpenter, 56, earlier in May, but the charges were just revealed by an Aspen judge Friday, according to the Aspen Daily News.
In addition to first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, the three defendants now also face accessory after the fact charges, said District Attorney Sherry Caloia.
Caloia explained that this means the Stylers and/or Carpenter assisted each other in covering up the murder, helping the culprits get away or both.
Before she was found dead, Pfister wrote on Facebook that the Styler’s, who had previously lived in Castle Rock, were no longer paying rent and utilities at the Aspen home they were renting from her.
Pfister was away on an extended trip to Australia when she wrote the Facebook post. She was found dead in her home on February 26, shortly after returning to the U.S.
Carpenter found Pfister's body and made the 911 call.
The new charges were filed on May 7 by Deputy District Attorney Andrea Bryan, reported the Aspen paper.
Caloia said the charges came about "because, as evidence is coming in and we're evaluating the case, we're seeing that (accessory account) is something that should be added."
Judge Gail Nichols of Pitkin County District Court sealed details about the murder case on March 3 based on requests from Caloia's office, reported the Aspen Daily News. However, both media and prosecution have filed motions to have the details released because they say the public should have access to arrest affidavits that lists police's allegations regarding the three suspects.
The next scheduled court date for the Stylers and Carpenter is June 9. This is a preliminary hearing, during which the judge will decide if there is enough evidence to bind them over for trial. At that time, Nichols will also determine if the three will be eligible for bond.
