OTTUMWA, Iowa — An engaged couple contacted police after finding a substance that looked like marijuana in their cheeseburgers from a McDonald’s in Ottumwa, Iowa at the end of April.

The couple told police they found the pot-like substance in between the patties of their double cheeseburgers on April 26, according to USA Today.

Ottumwa Police Lt. Jason Bell told the national newspaper the couple purchased their burgers from the drive-through around 8:15 p.m. They bit into the cheeseburgers to discover a plant-like item that resembled and smelled like cannabis.

Bell did not disclose how much of the substance was found on the burgers, but he said it seemed to “be consistent with marijuana.”

He added that police started an investigation around the incident and intend to send the material to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation for testing.

No charges had been filed against the restaurant.
