Aurora woman gets jail time for pimping, beating teen girl
AURORA, Colo. — An Aurora woman was sentenced to prison Wednesday following her conviction for pimping and assaulting an 18-year-old girl.
According to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Misty Dawn Harris, 34, received a 12-year prison sentence for pimping and assaulting a teenaged girl, who was held and forced to engage in acts of prostitution over a three-week stretch in January 2011.
Harris was arrested, along with Brandon Brown, 30, and Whitney Buckman, 26, after the victim told law enforcement she had been held against her will, beaten and forced to perform acts of prostitution following her move from Colorado Springs to Denver, said DA spokeswoman Sue Lindsay.
Brown pleaded guilty to felony menacing and was sentenced to five year’s in prison, said Lindsay. Buckman pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and received a two-year prison sentence.
Harris was convicted of pimping and assault by an Adams County jury in February.
According to Chief Deputy District Attorney Patrick Costigan, Harris was the one who beat the victim, broke her nose and drove her to more than 30 locations for prostitution — the victim never received a percentage of the money earned from these incidents.
“The victim was dehumanized, tortured and basically made into a slave,” Costigan said to the court. “Her head was bashed into a wall, she was whipped with a belt and forced to roll around naked in the mud for not getting enough money. In ten years as a prosecutor, I have never seen a human being treated like this.”
Adams County District Judge Jill Ellyn Straus remarked that this case “is one of the most disturbing that I have dealt with in three decades because it was so incredibly cruel.”
