EVERGREEN, Colo. – Shifting temperatures are causing problems in some areas, especially near Evergreen where a big sinkhole opened near Soda Creek Road.
The road has reopened but this is the season that concerns authorities. Melting snow is increasing the water runoff in many areas.
The 8-foot-wide sinkhole closed U.S. 40 between Soda Creek and El Rancho. Workers quickly moved in with heavy equipment and cleared everything. It reopened about 2 a.m. Wednesday.
When temperatures shift during the spring like in the fall, the ground might not be ready to accommodate the extra water from melting snow.
Look for the signs of unstable ground and avoid areas that are exposed to water that quickly rises.
