DENVER — The Denver Police Department says a man serving in the U.S. Air Force was killed Wednesday night when the motorcycle he was riding collided with an SUV being driven by a man who may have been drunk.

The accident happened near the intersection of East Alameda Avenue and South Monaco Parkway about 10:30 p.m. DPD said alcohol might have been a factor.

The driver of the SUV was identified as William Pettapiece, 32. Police say he drove off after the crash, but he was found nearby.

The identity of the 23-year-old airman has not been released.

Pettapiece is being held for investigation of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting death and driving under the influence.

He is being held at the Downtown Detention Center without bond. He is due in Denver District Court on Friday morning.
