Complaints against some of Denver’s biggest airlines rise

DENVER -- The results are in and it looks like travelers have a lot of complaints about airline travel.

Several airlines at DIA top the list of most complained about airlines.

Spirit Airlines passengers are most likely to complain about their experience, according to a report released Thursday by the CoPIRG Foundation.

Among major airlines, Spirit generates the most complaints for its size and generates an increasing number of complaints each year. Other most-complained about firms include Frontier Airlines, United Airlines, and American Airlines.

It seems every traveler has their own horror story.

Stacy Baca said, “Just with turbulence, delays, baggage loss ... I thought I was going to die once.”

Katie Barrows said, “They said the plane was five minutes from arriving, 10 minutes later they said the flight’s canceled.”

But there is a new report out called “The Unfriendly Skies: Five Years of Airline Passenger Complaints to the DOT” which analyzes complaints to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Aviation Consumer Protection Division about major U.S. airlines from 2009-2013.

The report found that most complaints are about delayed or canceled flights, lost baggage and poor customer service.

CoPirg spokesperson, Lisa Ritland said, “Frontier ended up right in the middle of the pack. What is concerning is just in the last year of the data, we saw complaints are rising, so that is what Frontier should take a look at.”

The results don’t surprise Stacy Baca. She said (referring to Sprit Airlines), “My friends have told me horror stories about them, they’re dirty, unprofessional, never on time, they cancel a lot of flights. But it’s cheap.”

Katie Barrows however, is now re-thinking her travel plans. She said, “I was a little shocked ... I was getting ready to book a ticket any day now on Spirit ... so I think I will rethink that plan.”

In case you are wondering, Southwest Airlines came in with the fewest consumer complaints, which Brianna Miles agrees with. She said, “They’re just entertaining, easy, sometimes chaotic. But probably the easiest, cheapest way to go. I can’t afford anything else.”
