CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. -- If you're heading up to the high country this weekend, there might be some pain before pleasure.

CDOT announced a new round of short, temporary closures on I-70 at the Twin Tunnels, just outside of Idaho Springs.

Prep work has begun to lengthen and widen the Westbound tunnel, just a few months after the eastbound tunnel was improved.

A third lane will be added to the westbound side, but will not, yet, be put into use for drivers.

The $55-million project is designed to ease congestion along the I-70 corridor and should be completed by Christmas.

Detours start April 1.

A double-lane closure for eastbound lanes goes from 7 a.m. to noon, Friday.
