LEXINGTON, Miss. — The 78-year-old man who woke up inside a body bag at a funeral home two weeks ago has died.

Dexter Williams, the coroner in Holmes County, Miss. says Walter Williams died in his home early Thursday morning.

“They came and got him again around 4:15 a.m.,” Williams’ nephew, Eddie Hester, told CNN affiliate WAPT. “I think he’s gone this time.”

Information about his cause of death wasn’t released.

The story about Williams gained worldwide attention on the Internet after employees at a funeral home who were preparing to embalm him were startled when the body bag he was in started to move.

He was taken back to a hospital and released several days later.

There were a couple of possible explanations for what happened. His family members say his pacemaker may have stopped working and then restarted. And doctors speculated a combination of different medications may have made it appear his vital signs were no longer responsive.
