DENVER -- Interstate 25 shut down on the northbound side between Broadway Street and University Boulevard Saturday afternoon due to multiple car crashes, according to the Denver Police Department.
DPD tweeted a media alert shortly after 1:15 p.m., saying that the stretch of the interstate would be closed for several hours due to several car accidents involving a high number of vehicles.
Less than five minutes after the initial tweet, DPD issued an update and said that a total of 104 vehicles were involved in multiple accidents on I-25.
Police said a crash at Logan Street, which happened around 11 a.m., killed one.
Denver Health said on Twitter that they received multiple patients from the crashes.
During a media briefing at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Scott Bookman, a chief paramedic at Denver Health, said 20 individuals had been transported
to the hospital plus one fatality.
He added that paramedics stayed on the scene to see if there were more injuries and to keep involved parties on buses to stay warm at the accident site.
An update issued by Denver Health late Saturday afternoon said that 30 people had been injured in the accidents: 14 were transferred to Denver Health medical facilities, four were taken to St. Anthony's Hospital and 12 were at Swedish Medical Cent
er.
The Colorado Department of Transportation tweeted shortly before 4 p.m. that the accidents had been cleared and I-25 northbound had reopened.
Following the accident clean-up, DPD said vehicles that were towed could be loc
ated at the All City Stadium Parking Lot near South High.

A Saturday snow storm brought freezing temperatures and a fresh inch of snow to the metro area.
Traffic along the highway was at a standstill while the crashes were cleared.
Travel along Interstate 70 in the mountains was also difficult Saturday as poor driving conditions caused several crashes. CDOT said drivers could expect extremely long delays through Summit, Clear Creek and Eagle counties.
