DENVER -- A wreck involving an RTD bus near the busy intersection of Santa Fe Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue killed one person Tuesday morning, Denver police said.

Police said a Route 31 bus was traveling southbound on Platte River Drive shortly after 1:30 a.m. when it struck a vehicle that was traveling westbound on Mississippi.

The crash killed the driver of the car -- the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner later identified the victim as 61-year-old Joseph Tracy of Denver.

There was a large amount of debris scattered across the intersection as of 5:15 a.m., as police investigated the scene in an effort to determine possible fault. Westbound Mississippi and southbound Platte River near the intersection were closed due to the that investigation, but reopened around 5:30 a.m.

Per standard RTD procedures, the driver of the bus will be tested for drugs and alcohol before police issue an official determination regarding fault in the accident.
