COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A woman says breast feeding a puppy was the only way to save his life.

She posted a photo to show what she claims is her while feeding the puppy.

She took in an orphaned litter of lab-mix puppies. The runt of the litter wasn't eating.

She told KRDO in Colorado Springs she felt like he was so weak he may not have had an hour left.

She says he wouldn't take anything from a bottle or the K-9 formula she had for the puppies.

She decided as a last resort to save his life to put him on her and see if he would take her breast milk.

She doesn't want to be identified because of the backlash she believes she'll face from the "taboo" of her action.

She says she posted the photo on her personal Facebook page to explain her action. And then it began spreading around the Internet.

The puppy is now a little over a week old. He's doing very well.

A veterinarian doesn't recommend breast feeding a puppy. Dr. Amber Williams told KRDO human milk isn't the best thing nutritionally for other animals. She also says there is a risk of passing diseases from puppies to babies.

The woman's 15-month old baby was previously weaned off of her milk.

The puppy is now taking the proper formula out of a bottle.
