Convicted felon armed, holding 13-year-old hostage in Arvada

ARVADA, Colo. — Police responded in force to a hostage situation in east Arvada on Monday night, and officers were still negotiating with an armed suspect who had taken a 13-year-old hostage inside a residence on Tuesday morning.
Traffic was blocked off for several blocks near the intersection of West 60th Avenue and Gray Street as of 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Monday night police said the suspect, who was being considered armed and dangerous, has a criminal record.
As of early Tuesday morning, the situation was still ongoing, with police saying that the 13-year-old boy was being held hostage inside the residence, and that the suspect and teen hostage do not know each other.
“We have been in contact with the suspect,” Arvada Police spokesperson Jill McGranahan said. “We’re working very hard to end this situation peacefully.”
Police said they evacuated much of the surrounding area as a precaution.
The standoff began around 5:30 p.m. Monday when the suspect picked a random home in the neighborhood and kicked the door down, McGranahan said.
Inside the home was a family, some of whom escaped unharmed, she said. However, the suspect was able to take the 13-year-old boy hostage.
McGranahan said the suspect has been monitoring TV and Internet news and has been talking to negotiators about what he sees.
The suspect contacted FOX31 Denver reporter Julie Hayden and talked about his situation. At the request of Arvada police, we are not publishing what the man said until after the standoff ends.
