DENVER — A man who allegedly killed a family acquaintance told his mother that he was God and that he had “killed the devil,” according to an arrest affidavit.

Zachery Cooper, 25, allegedly beat 70-year-old Peter Morales with a baseball bat and cut his throat Tuesday evening at a home in the 2800 block of Adams Street. When the suspect’s mother arrived home from running errands, Cooper sat down on the couch next to her, naked, and allegedly made the statements, telling her that everything would be OK.

When police arrived about 7 p.m., they found Morales dead in a back room of the house with a broken baseball bat laying nearby. His throat was also slit.

Cooper was discharged from the military earlier this year and may have mental health issues, police reported. Cooper was being held without bond on first-degree murder charges.
