BOULDER, Colo. — Police in Boulder arrested a man after they say he beat two raccoons with a nail-studded board, killing one and injuring another as “revenge” for killing his pet cat years ago.

Police said 50-year-old Richard Moller was arrested Monday after witnesses called police saying that they saw a man jump into a dumpster at 5610 Arapahoe Ave. and start beating two raccoons with a nail-studded board around 6:45 p.m.

Witnesses could hear the animals “screaming and moaning,” according to the police report. When they yelled at Moller, he replied, “All raccoons must die!” and fled the scene.

When Boulder police contacted Moller, he told officers that raccoons killed his cat a couple of years ago, saying, “It was my opportunity to kill the raccoons,” according to court records.

Moller insisted that he was not using the side of the board with nails in it, and that he was just trying to subject the raccoons to “blunt force trauma.”

The 3-foot board with nails sticking out of it was found inside the dumpster along with the raccoons’ bodies. Police said one of the injured raccoons ran away before they could catch it.

Moller is facing animal cruelty charges.
