Police ID driver in fatal Lakewood hit-and-run

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Police arrested the driver of a pickup truck who they say hit and killed a motorcyclist Friday night.

Lakewood police located Juan Carlos Hernandez-Lupercio, 47, Saturday morning after several tips led to his arrest.

At approximately 9:20 p.m. Friday, police said a dark-colored truck pulled out in front of a motorcycle heading southbound on South Sheridan Boulevard.

After striking the motorcycle near the intersection of South Sheridan Boulevard and West Center Avenue, Hernandez-Lupercio drove off, according to police.

The driver of the motorcycle was taken to a local hospital where he later pronounced died from injuries sustained in the crash. The victim has been identified as 47-year-old Dana Schaeffer.

Authorities also found the 2000 GMC pickup truck Hernandez-Lupercio was driving. He faces charges including failing to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death, careless driving resulting in death, no proof of insurance and failure to notify police of an accident.
