COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Colorado Springs police continue the search for 33-year-old registered sex offender Jacob Lashun Lewis, who sexually assaulted a 71-year-old female back in February.
Police said they have completed their investigation and obtained probable cause for an arrest warrant against Lewis, charging him with sexual assault and crimes against at-risk adults. The Adult Sex Assault Unit assisted with the initial investigation.
The inciting incident occurred on Thursday, February 7, when police responded to a home on East Boulder Street about 10:15 p.m. A 71-year-old woman had reported her house was broken into and she was sexually assaulted.
She told police she was watching television when she saw someone through her bedroom window. The victim grabbed her handgun as protection against the intruder. However, the suspect burst through the door and attacked her before she had a chance to use the weapon. He disarmed the victim and pushed her to the floor, where he sexually assaulted her, she said.
The suspect then turned the gun on the woman and demanded she give him her wallet. He fled the scene with her wallet, and about $100 in cash.
A friend of the suspect, Larry P. Maes, eventually identified Lewis after seeing video footage released by police. The footage showed Lewis and Maes in a Walmart store shortly after the attack.
As reported in the arrest affidavit, Maes contacted local authorities within an hour of seeing himself on television. He told police he drove him and Lewis to the victim’s home the evening of the attack — he said he wasn’t aware of Lewis’s intentions.
This was not Lewis’s first interaction with the victim. According to the affidavit, the two had met previously when he came to her house to assist with some yard work.
Lewis is still at large.
Police are asking anyone with information on Lewis and his whereabouts to contact local authorities at 444-7000 or 634-7867. All informants will remain anonymous.
