WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — An overnight standoff ended in the Friday morning arrest of a man suspected in a stabbing that landed a teen in the intensive care unit Thursday night.
According to Wheat Ridge Police, Angelo Ortiz, 20, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault at the home of a family member near the intersection of 26th and Sheridan around 5:30 a.m. Friday. A SWAT team was on hand to assist in the arrest.
The arrest was made after Ortiz fled the scene of a stabbing that police said he committed in Wheat Ridge Thursday night. Police said they were called to the scene of that incident at a small apartment complex near the intersection of West 26th Avenue and Sheridan around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
Police said callers reported a fight in the area,. Over the course of that fight, police said a 17-year-old male was stabbed several times. That male was taken to a nearby hospital’s ICU. The condition and identity of the teen were not available Friday morning.
After the stabbing, police said Ortiz fled to a family member’s residence at a nearby apartment complex, where Ortiz was eventually arrested.
Several attempts were made by officers to contact Ortiz, police said, but none were successful. SWAT teams moved in, successfully removing all the residents of the apartment before Ortiz surrendered without incident.
