MARANHAO, Brazil – A soccer referee was killed and dismembered in a fight during a match, Fox News reported.

During a soccer match on June 30 in the town of Pius XII, referee Otávio Jordan da Silva de Catanhede started arguing with player Linda dos Santos Abreu over a questionable call.

The quarrel led to Jordan ejecting Abreu from the match, at which point the two men began to exchange blows. During the altercation Jordan pulled out a knife and stabbed Abreu, who died while being transported to a nearby hospital.

In retaliation, friends and relatives of Abreu stormed the field and tied up the referee. He was then stoned to death, with his body cut into pieces. The attackers then put his head on a stake at midfield.

One man has been arrested in connection with the brutal slaying and two others are being sought.
