GOLDEN, Colo. — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating human remains discovered Sunday afternoon on Lookout Mountain, a sheriff’s office spokesperson confirmed.

Hikers discovered the body about 4:40 p.m. in a remote area about five miles from Interstate 70, on the Golden side of the mountain. Police have since removed the remains.

Candace Raymonde claimed her 21-year-old son-in-law, Scott Johnson, was hiking in the area with his 6-year-old son when they came across the remains, the gender of which was difficult to identify.

“The body still had clothes on,” Raymonde said. “It is pretty decomposed and appeared that the skull was fractured.”

Emergency radio traffic seemed to indicate that the body was in a skeletal state, but this has yet to be confirmed.
